They don't charge for software, you can download it straight from their site 
whether or not you buy from them.  There should be a demo version, but I 
haven't looked.  I will probably use something like this to monitor my house 
temperatures when I start fiddling with floor heating.

Have a look on this site at a range of data loggers  http://rswww.com then 
"loggers" into the search box.
Some charge extra for software, but the loggers are cheap.

It used to be just parallel port connections, but that's mostly upgraded to 
USB these days.
