This is close to on-topic since a lot of Elecraft equipment gets bought/sold
on eBay.
I've been using eBay since 1998. I've had some major disputes with sellers
over items that were poorly packaged and damaged in transit. I've had major
disagreements with buyers who wouldn't pay, or would not accept packages
delivered to them. I've gone through the full-blown dispute resolution
process with one seller to get my money back.
In none of these cases was there ever a lack of information on the eBay (or
PayPal) sites. I've never felt the need to talk to a real person. In this
specific case (phishing scam), for example, there are FAQ articles that deal
with this issue -- hence the dozen or so responders here who knew about the
spoof at ebay.com email address. If people would make use of the help that's
there, they wouldn't complain about what's not (phone support).
I think eBay is one of the miracles of the Internet revolution. I went to
Dayton and saw a table with four Collins 75A-x receivers on it. eBay has
four listed today, and every day all year. I didn't see any Elecraft gear in
the flea market (though I heard there was a K2 there somewhere). Today on
eBay there is a K1, a K2, a T1, and an offer for someone to build your K2
for you for $180. It's like Hamvention on your computer, 24 hours a day, 365
days a year, only without the guys on those electric scooters running you
over. (Or, if you're one of the electric scooter guys, without all the
people between you and a good deal.)
I guess fewer bidders just means more stuff for me, but I wouldn't quit eBay
over the lack of phone-based support.
