A couple of other techniques are to use a lint remover - one of those sticky
roller things that take lint and hair off of clothes - and roll it over the
desktop and floor - or a small hand vacuum (empty and wash the dirt cup
first!) to carefully go over the whole area, then dump the debris out where
you can pick through it carefully. 

Not that I've ever dropped anything....
