Funny, but Steve, N7VS, comments are quite true! The best way to avoid bears
is to help them avoid us. In bear country, one of the most dangerous things
one can do is take a really quiet hike along a trail, especially when
walking into the wind, or sit for long periods under a tree wearing the
earbuds while hamming on a KX1. 

Almost every bear out there hates the idea of interacting with humans, much
less taking a bite out of one, but they aren't going to stand for being
surprised in "their" territory. They're downright human-like in their
reaction to being surprised, only they're so much bigger and stronger that
we are it's no contest (and if the bear you find isn't bigger than you, be
sure that momma is and she's coming on the double!). 

It really makes for much safer portable operation if you make a little
racket now and again so the wildlife will know that you're around.

Maybe we need wildlife tips in the KX1 operator's instructions <G>.
