[Elecraft] Raspy sounds on 80 meters

That can also be caused by having a strong signal from a BC band station in
the neighborhood. The noise blanker, in order to do it's thing, MUST turn
the I.F. signal path off an on at a fairly high rate of speed (once per
pulse of noise). 

That process turns it into a mixer, just looking for signals to mix together
to produce an endless array of strange-sounding effects. That's why the
manual advises using the noise limiter ONLY when it's really needed!

As you get closer to the BC Band it's easier for a strong broadcast signal
to put enough RF into the front end for a problem-causing amount to make it
in where it can do mischief. 

Some of our European friends have to cope with that sort of stuff around 40
meters because of their proximity to many of those huge SW broadcasting
stations. 

Another possibility to investigate is a transformer on the operating table.
Some ops have reported hearing a buzz or 'raspiness' on signals more on one
band than others due to AC magnetic fields around the K2.

Probably totally unrelated, but I once heard something like that (using a
different radio) that was caused by the noise blanker being on and picking
up a lot of impulse noise on the band. It was most noticed on strong signals

I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of
success. I went down to 80 meters just now to try an 80 meter cw net, and I
am hearing all these NC contest stations. One guy sounds like a buzzsaw. I
try to tune him in but the signal quality is awlful. So I go up 5 kHz and
find another raspy station... and another... and another. All of 80 meters
sounds raspy, even the lsb guys. I go to 40m and 20 meters and the signals
seem fine. The filters seem like they are in top shape also. The rig is a
K2(#402)/100 with KAT100 and KDSP. Never experienced a problem until now.
Any ideas?
