The KD9SV front end saver has been mentioned several times with regard to
protecting the RANT or receive antenna input from high signal level inputs
but nobody has mentioned the advantage of this device. It is intended also
as a variable preamp (DXpedition II FES unit at
http://www.radiobooks.com/frontends.htm) for use with antennas that one
would normally use for a separate receive antenna input; i.e. beverage,
loop, pennant, flag etc. This device in particular, and others of this ilk,
are musts to have when one is addicted to the lower bands where separate
receive antennas really shine but where their gain needs a bit of boosting.
I would never be without one on my trips because I just don't want to take a
chance something MIGHT go wrong with that RANT input. For those that
travel, I highly recommend this device.

I just made a trip to VK9XG and VK9CG in October/November last year. My
only radio was a K2/100. It performed admirably, never missing a beat,
however you can bet I had protection devices along. I am sure I worked some
of you folks, K2 to K2.

One other advantage of the front end saver line of products, most key
amplifiers. Now most modern amps do not need an interposing relay but
certainly the older ones, like the Kenwood TL-922 or the Heathkit SB220,
hardly traveling amplifiers, certainly do. The FES I use has such an
interposing relay, more insurance for those that want it and comfort when so
far from home.
