Good Evening,
Wow, that last one was fun. Greg, ND0V, mentioned he could hear K1EV,
Bill, better than he could me. Bill had a tough time copying me but he
agreed when I asked him to run the net for a bit. After ND0V signed I
passed the net upstream to Tom who worked Ray, K2HYD, in NC with a much
better antenna than he had last week :) Way to go Ray I copied you at a
solid 339 in Oregon. Then Tom passed the net to Bill in Connecticut.
Bill had a very good response to his calls. I copied all of his side and
most of the other side of each contact. After a good showing he passed
the net back to Tom who ran a few more stations. Only AK7V was not heard
at this location. But Tom, being the good operator he is, sent both calls
each time. Thanks Tom, this makes the net just that much more fun. I get
to learn from highly skilled ops. I've got the enthusiasm, they've got
the brains and experience. Makes for a good team. Thank you both for
such a fun time.
Twenty meters was one of those nights where I felt I had cotton balls
in my headphones. Then at a certain point the band just went away. Tom
was running it at the time but I lost him entirely. Dave, K4TO called and
I told him Tom was working. Then Tom slowly faded into the band noise.
After waiting for a bit, thinking he had turned his beam Eastward, I
called Dave and checked him in.  Normally twenty is the productive band;
this evening forty meters netted us the most check ins.
A few new folks tonight but also a large number of long time members of
the group. A few of them were tired. Ken had worked with the Salvation
Army to stem the tide of the Red River of the North. Mike was tired from
his tower work but checked in none the less. Ric had worked hard too,
mentioning a sore back. But it is Spring so we are all getting out and
stretching our muscles after a long Winter. I split more wood yesterday
and today in the respite we had from our storms.
Currently it is raining but during dinner it was very warm and sunny.
I found some trillium blooming in the back yard and a few early daffodils
in the front yard. I saw evidence of elk while I was locating those
trillium. It appears they were peeking into my radio shack last night :)
Only one and the hoof prints looked like they belonged to a cow. I put up
the hummingbird feeder today so I would not be attacked when I opened the
front door. For such little critters they sure have attitude! The saw
whet owls are back; each evening I hear one calling for another. Sounds
like a sawyer whetting his saw with a file. Very odd note, very
distinctive and easy to recognize, as easy as determining the call of a
veery or the cry of an osprey.
