Bob,    A couple of possible reasons for the 500hz shift after doing the
calibration.

Being a CW man I use Wayne's procedure and zero beat WWV using the spot tone
with the K2 set to CW. It took me a while to realise that if I did not
CHANGE the setting to LSB before running the CAL PLL then the calibration
was off by amount of the side tone (550hz in my case)

You are probably aware that WWV and WWVH broadcast alternately 500hz and
600hz tone for 45 secs of most minute periods.    It is possible to
inadvertently zero beat to these tones which will also cause a
miss-calibration.   To avoid this check the zero beating when there is no
tone present.

The method will produce calibration accuracy to within 10 to 20hz with care.
