Hello All,
Today Ms. P and I went down to Banks (nearest town local to Buxton and
halfway to Ron's domain) for the Jamboree on the Air. We met lots of
fellow amateurs, a scout leader, some scouts, and some explorers. I took
an HF rig with a set of paddles and a straight key but no antenna. My
goal was to show the folks CW and get them to participate. I got the kids
to send their names and the adults to send a bit on the key and paddles.
Others had slow scan TV, packet radio, and SSB for the scouts to play
with. The kids and adults kept coming back to me though. There is
something about the music of CW which drags them in.
When I set up at a hamfest two years ago, in an Elecraft booth, our CW
station got a lot of folks over to look and simply to listen. The older
members of my audience looked like they were listening to contacts from
long ago. Until I flubbed a note then they would grin at me and say
nothing. They were enjoying the show. The kids came by and listened,
watched, and asked questions. If someone worked me from one of the other
booths or PM they earned an Elecraft QSL card. CW is just plain fun!
Can't help but enjoy teaching folks about it as I learn more myself.
Which leads me to this week. Tomorrow it appears the bands will be
open and the operator on this end is in fine fettle. Hopefully you all
can see clear to join me in having a little fun on the air. It doesn't
hurt (much) and you may just get to where you enjoy it. You don't need an
Elecraft rig to join us but after you hear their fine note you may just
want to get one. Please contact Eric or Wayne and they'll have Lisa send
one off to you. Then if there are any problems Gary will help set you
straight. He and his fine assistants will NOT let you fail. At this
point the fun is just beginning. You get to use the rig the way it was
designed. Plus you get to play on the Elecraft CW Net. What could be
better than that?

    Please join us:
Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4pm PDT) 14050 kHz
Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for net details. Thank you
Dan.

    Until tomorrow then,
       Kevin. KD5ONS
