It's been argued here for over 200 years and was closer to happening
20-30 years ago than presently. Some military contracts in the 1970s
and 80s actually called for the drawings to be metric (this was later
dropped). Oh well, I guess the expense of two sets of wrenches,
etc., isn't all that bad (anyone for Whitworth?)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Metric was adopted by the US Government as the *standard* system of weights
and measures in the USA in the 1800's. What Congress failed to do back then
was *require* its use. As Bob notes, they tried to mandate it a few years
ago, based on the billions of US$ it'd save us every year, but there was
darn near a revolt protesting it.

So Metric comes to us Yanks by stealth. We used to buy a quart of a soft
drink, not it's a litre (or liter) more often than not, if one looks at the
fine print. We used to buy a pound of something, now we get 0.45 kg
according to the package, and so on.

In the mean time, you can often find me in the CW portion of the 40
met...er...the 1570.8 inch band. Or should it be the 43.74 yard band?
