I don't understand why someone would want to operate split. The only time I

Not at all, Eric!

I have a K2 that is ALWAYS in "split" mode. That's because I like to use the
main tuning control for tuning the receiver without disturbing the transmit
frequency.

Of course, it's essential to listen on any frequency before transmitting, so
I tune around and either tune in a station I want to call or find an unused
freq to call CQ, then I just hit A=B and my tx frequency is now the
frequency I'm listening on.

Then I can call and between CQ's I can tune around for calls off freq
without changing my tx freq, or during a QSO I can adjust the rx tuning with
the big knob and my tx freq stays exactly where it is.

I know, one can do that with an RIT control, but it's so much nicer to tune
with the BIG knob!

What I have noticed in recent years is a growing number of ops who never
tune off freq for an answer to their CQ! I've heard a guy calling CQ over
and over and over and another station only a few hundred Hz away - perhaps
crystal controlled - is answering and answering and answering and never gets
heard!

True MOST Hams use rigs with a VFO in the TX and most Hams use transceivers,
but that's only most, not all. And some of the most interesting (and at
times rare) stations are those you have to tune for...
