OMG,  I just realized, thanks to Lee, the double meaning of my post.  Yes SMD are Lead Free because there are no leads for connecting to circuit boards, and yes SMD are Lead Free because there is no lead (element Pb) in the solder on the connectin points.

I needed a nice chuckle today.

It is very unfortunate that the English language admits to so much 
ambiguity. In this case, "lead" can mean "Symbol Pb A soft, malleable, 
ductile, bluish-white, dense metallic element..." or "A conductor by 
which one circuit element is electrically connected to another."

Written exactly the same but pronounced differently. Arghhh!

I leave it to those more knowledgable on the list to make the 
distinction. :-)
