Firewire, also known as IEEE 1394, is just a port--like USB--that's  
on most new computers.  If your computer doesn't have one, you can  
buy a card with the port on it to put in your PC.  You can get them  
for around $20 to $30, although it's possible to pay a lot more.   
You'll also need a firewire cable to connect between your camera and  
the PC.  Those also range tremendously in price--from $5 to as much  
as $50.  But it's worth going the firewire route, as you lose a lot  
of quality transferring video any other way.   This is true whether  
you're transferring to a PC or to an external stand-alone DVD  
recorder intended primarily for use with TV sets.

Most XP PCs have software on them, in the accessories package, for  
doing the transfer and simple editing.  If not, there's freeware and  
also commercial packages for as little as $20.
