Thanks for the inputs ... problem solved, and it turned out to be a 
classic lesson in "correlation does not imply cause."  I had assumed 
that the only thing that happened was that I turned off the supply while 
the battery was still floating on the output.  When we returned home, 
turning on the supply did nothing, ergo leaving the battery on the 
output caused the problem.

Real problem:  A breaker in the box behind the door to the shack had 
tripped and there was no AC to the supply.  I've had problems with this 
breaker in the past, but they sort of went away, both in fact and from 
my mind.  So, just because the human birth rate in Copenhagen is well 
correlated throughout the year with the stork population (a fact) 
doesn't mean ... well you probably get the idea.

Off to get some new ones on the K2.
