18" from a linear power supply, motor, or anything else that has a 
strong magnetic field.  You can put it closer to a switching supply. 
Elecraft has a mod kit available, named after me, part no. K2VCOSHLDKT, 
which significantly reduces the sensitivity to magnetic fields.
