Bill,

In August 2003 I had a near lightning strike:
about 120 feet from the house.
The doorbell rang, the garage door opener was
fried, a relay in my grounded manual ASTU was
blackened, all the CRT displays in the house
needed degaussing, the cable modem and the router
were fried.
It's the EMP that puts whole multiple of amps
through any moderately long wire nearby by
magnetic induction if there is a conductive path.
