Going over the KX-1 manual, it calls for aligning first the BFO and then the
DDS by dialing in a strong carrier (WWV, etc) and then using the BFO or DDS
menus. Can someone suggest some alternate alignment methods? I have a
calibrated freq counter and service monitor.

Sure, Jay. You can use the signal generator function of your Service Monitor
for the signal called for in the procedure, if you wish.

What those procedures do is input an offset to compensate for any small
errors in the frequencies of the crystals used in the KX1. That offset is
stored in memory using the BFO and DDS MENU functions so the frequency
display will be as accurate as possible. You should expect it to be within
200 Hz even without calibration.

A signal such as WWV is suggested simply because you cannot get anything
more accurate in frequency than WWV. Certainly your service monitor, if
properly calibrated, will be close enough to use.
