For the vast majority of my email, especially business correspondence, I
prefer to keep the entire conversation intact. It's only on mailing lists
like this one where one has to be sensitive to the preferences of thousands
of readers that I tighten up the responses.
I've found when you are letting the entire conversation accumulate below
your most recent entry, having it automatically indent or add > characters
results in a real mess. By turning that option off I have more control.
I prefer the quoting method above vs. the "Dan wrote..." method, but either
way, as long as it gets cleaned up before it gets posted, it's good. I also
prefer putting the brief quoted text ABOVE my reply, and quoting just enough
to remind the reader what I'm responding to, as above. OTOH when leaving the
entire conversation intact one should always reply above the previous posts,
as has been pointed out (quite correctly) by our moderator here.
