[Elecraft] ECN net this Sunay VS Hurricane Frances

NREN has no "designated" frequencies beyond how the ECN has a "designated"
frequency. No FCC or ARRL announcement about 14,050 has been made declaring
this an emergency communications frequency that should not be used for
normal operations.

NREN is a fairly new CW-only alternative to the common SSB and VHF emergency
nets. Here's what the ARRL had to say in their announcement: "...(NREN)Net
members have been asked to monitor 14,050 kHz and 7050 kHz for
health-and-welfare, emergency traffic and hurricane information throughout
the weekend..."

Actually NREN members very often monitor those frequencies. That's where
members call if they have traffic for any reason outside of regular net
schedules. The announcement is merely a "heads up" that there's a
better-than-normal chance that someone will have some heath and welfare
messages to handle at odd times.

I think it's a great program. It makes use of the fact that a low-powered CW
station working on emergency power can set up and get on the air in the
middle of a disaster area to send traffic across the country more
efficiently than the complex repeater-based VHF nets or even most SSB
installations. Of course, it takes greater operator skill than talking on a
mic, but the advantages are significant if the operator is available. They
have a web site with more info at http://tinyurl.com/7x5m2.

So, it's a good idea to be courteous and avoid both 14,050 and 7,050 but
don't be surprised if you hear nothing but routine QSO's there.

Didn't the FCC recently announce that no emergency -related frequencies
would be "protected" except the 60 meter channels?
