Ron, in the limit "a whole bunch of parallel wires" approaches a sheet.

Interesting. I always used flat copper strap for Marine (and elsewhere) too,
but the comments about braid caught my eye.

A round conductor has the greatest surface area for volume and RF flows only
on the surface. So it has the lowest resistance at RF.

Two identical conductors in parallel have half the inductance of one
conductor, 4 have 1/4 and so forth. So wouldn't you WANT a whole bunch of
paralleled wires for minimum inductance?

I thought the problem was that of corrosion. Since the wire has the nice
property of maximum surface area for its volume, it would be the quickest to
corrode through, severing the conductor and increasing the inductance of the
whole set.

I thought susceptibility to corrosion and the fact that it was easily
damaged were the reasons why braid isn't used!

In my business (marine HF) we use 3" x .011" copper strap. I have found that
braid acts lick a wick and absorbs moisture then rots from the inside out. I
hadn't considered it becoming lots of individual conductors, but that makes
sense.

Round conductors are bad news due to inductance inherent in round conductors
- all the more reason to use flat "strap" with lots of surface area and
avoid as many bends or folds as possible. If you are unable to easily locate
flat strap you might try a garden supply that specializes in organic or
pesticide free practices - they use it to fight snails.
