Of course, the downside of rhombics is if you have one; you need several
more to cover directions of interest.

The horizontal loop was chosen over rhombic for Field Days because you want
to work in all directions from the central part of the country, (here).

W6AM had many rhombics and kept reducing his field to the point that he went
from 75 acres I think, to 25.   On 25 acres, he had to put Rhombics at
differing elevations so they could cross over each other to pick up desired
DX directions.  But, they worked!   His were as high as 80 feet on spliced
telephone poles.  His biography is fascinating not only for his long career
as an operating ham; but also for his wire antenna exploits.

Being up on a mesa at his final QTH for the antenna farm surely helped, with
it being a point looking out to the ocean.
