John,
My K2 #524 was acquired in the Summer of 1999. I was working in
northern California at the time and the job was coming to an end. I
was savoring several months at home so figured the K2 would be a good
project for that Fall. I don't recall exactly when construction was
completed but I have sold off a boatload of gear since then. The K2
remains on the desk. It's been my primary radio since it was built. I
too have logged thousands of contacts with it.
I ordered the SSB module at the same time as the K2 but it remains
unbuilt in the box to this day (I think it's at least 50 rev levels
behind by now). Who needs SSB? Why did I buy it? Who knows?
#524 is a trooper that has the internal auto-tuner, audio filter and
NB options installed. My only gripe is that I had *no* scratchy volume
pot problems until folks on this list started talking about it! I
think all the emails about it caused some of the mojo to be
redistributed inside the rig exacerbating the problem. I know there is
a mod to fix it and maybe, someday, I might do it.
I keep saying that I am going to buy another K2 so I can get a serial
number in the "modern era" and all the updates without performing
major surgery on my old K2. But then I fire up #524, work a little DX
and wonder why I would want another or to change the one I have...
Ask me again at the 10 year mark.

Subject: [Elecraft] Long Term Reliability: K2 5 year anniversary
Wanted to discuss K2 reliability statistics w/ Elecraft at Dayton but
couldn't get within 5 feet of Wayne or Eric due to the clamoring crowd
:-) It would be interesting to hear from others at or near the 5
year milestone.
