..and, this time, I got right down to it: dropped Nate
off, found a spot to park, popped the trunk.

The twenty meter hamstick went up quick, as I'd
left the lid mount on since driving back from Dayton.
Got the little insulated lunchbag out of the corner of
the trunk, then snaked the coax up through the back
seat.

Back to the drivers' seat, now, and out pops Kixie,
paddles, and earbuds. Snapping it all together, I hear
some sigs, hit tune and the sigs improve, but -
hmmm...only get a 2:1 match, and about a watt. Well,
these batteries have been in this thing forever...

Just then, I realize I'm hearing a CQ, right about
at 14.060, and it's DL3SEU/QRP. I answer, and he
comes right back to me. Dieter (how's THAT for a
wacky name?) is near Stuttgart, using a HB xcvr at one
watt with a dipole. 559 both ways, we chat from a
quarter past six to about six-thirty.

Halfway through, I decide to straighten out the
coax running through the car and retune. This time,
it's 1.5:1, and nearly a watt and a half.

This must be that gray-line thing I've been
hearing about, or something. Whatever it is, I have
some very happy thoughts for quite some time, just
thinking about it.
