I've come across an excellent "smart" charger which I use for my K2 (S/N4023)  It is a POWERSONIC PSC-12800. It has both a fast charge and a float charge built in.  When it charges fast, it can supply up to 0.75 amps, then it switches to a float charge at 14.0 VDC low current.  It has two LEDs, the float charge is indicated by a green LED, the fast charge by a red one.  Works great.
I think Allied Radio or some of the other electronic suppliers have it in their catalog.
