[Elecraft] Trouble With Torroids

Hi

The problem is not with winding the toroids. Most of the problems encountered building a K2, K1 or KX1 is removing the insulation from the toroid leads. The wire Elecraft supplies is heat strippable. That is you can burn off the insulation with a soldering iron. The problem is usually not stripping up far enough on the wire and when the toroid is mounted an the leads are pulled tight the insulation is pulled down into the joint making a bad connection. Most people use the solder blob method described in the manual. This works well if you strip up past the toroid core. The core is not conductive so it is ok if the bare wire touches the core. I use my Hakko desoldering tool to strip the leads. Just insert the wire into the nozzle apply a little solder and pull the trigger. The wire is perfectly stripped and tinned. After winding several hundred (I have built 14 K2's 3 K1's a KX1 and all of the options) I no longer wind them I let Mychael do it. I will do if I have to, but I charge 30% more to do it.

Can someone enlighten me as to the proverbial problem that seems to come up
with torriods? Just build a K1 and found the torroids straightforward to
wind, strip and tin. The unit fired up flawlessly. Maybe it's because I'm a
sailor and found winding torroids an awful lot like whipping line (wrapping
small twine around the end of rope so it doesn't unravel). Beginner's luck
on my part? Or am I missing something?
