Actually, even with all the clone makers out there, IBM dominated the 
market right up until they tried to make it proprietary. When IBM 
introduced the microchannel architecture (MCA) machines, they took off 
in an different direction than the rest of the market -- and the market 
left them behind.

Few remember that IBM had three different OSes available for the 
original IBM PC - PC-DOS, CP-M 86, and the UCSD P-system. PC-DOS was 
the least expensive.
