Thirty years of experimenting with and wasting money on about every type of compact antenna that could be made portable have led me to the conclusion, beyond any doubt, that a simple, cheap, compact, light-weight, resonant dipole is the only really "decent" portable antenna.

Short loading-coil verticals are, OTOH, absolute abominations, even though one can waste a lot of money and signal on commercially-made versions.
