[Elecraft] K2 phase noise

Hi Fred and others,

What you probably hear is indeed phase-noise. It is however impossible to
observ phase-noise on a receiver like the FT1000MP because there is great
chance that you will be listening to the phase-noise of the FT1000 rather
than the K2. The proper way to measure phase-noise is to beat the PLL-signal
against a VERY clean signal on exactly the same frequency. The differential
spectrum you then observ is the phase noise and it can also be made audible.
The audio-test is not suitable for an absolute measurement of course but is
a very good way to compare oscillators.

Phase noise is a given factor, allthough some of us are trying to improve
the K2 PLL. It is allready low in the K2 compared to the FT1000MP (look in
the "rig comparisons" list).

Best 73 and enjoy the K2!

Dick/PA2DW

Always learn things reading the posts here.

I can monitor my K2 with an djacent FT-1000MP. The signal is clean and
sweet, but off frequency a hash is heard.

Q: is this the "phase noise" recently referred to?

Q: How is it "getting out?" My real question is, can it be filtered? For
example, what if I put a 1:1 balun right at the out put of the K2, might
this filter it? What about bead balun at that point??? Or what have you?

thank you,

Fred
