I think the truth is that email is way too easy a delivery method, to post and to receive. We
(users) are a little lazy that way, I mean that in a pleasant way of course :-)
If the mail list did not exist already with a large installed user base then, I would agree a forum
based community with email notification for new posts (user controlled) would be the way to go (my
preference is vBulletin but I have setup/used/enhanced phpBB and IPB as well). I have set up many
of these but I have never been able to convince a mail list user base to move en mass, which is what
is needed.
