Aloha Rick,
I think I observed the same symptom with my KX1 during inital testing a
couple of weeks ago: with the KX1 transmitting into a dummy load, and =
a
nearby IC-746 on an antenna, I heard a very weak (S2-3) growling note =
on 20M
but a strong (S9+) clean note on 40. Then I reversed the situation, =
putting
the KX1 on an antenna and the 746 on dummy load, and it sounded great =
on
both bands! I have been using the KX1 on 20m and have not received any
adverse signal reports concerning tone.
This is really unexplained, and since things seem to be working I =
haven't
looked any further into it, but for the time being I have rationalized =
it as
follows:
1. Maybe at first I had the KX1 too close to its power supply. This =
should
be easy to check the next time I use the KX1. (746 power supply is on =
the
floor, six feet from either rig, but I was using a small Lambda =
switcher for
the KX1 and it was on the table top.)
2. Maybe the KX1 power supply was too close to the 746. Same comment.
3. Maybe there was some kind of ground loop between the two rigs.
4. Maybe I wasn't careful enough and I wasn't tuned to the real KX1 =
output
frequency, but to some nearby spurious signal, and who knows what that
might sound like. S2-3 is awful weak.
5. Maybe the switcher doesn't like to be loaded so lightly and =
sometimes
misbehaves. It's a 10A supply.
If I learn more I will let you know. If I were you I would just try it =
on
the air.
