Having lurked around here for several years since building K2 S/N 1289 I =
can
say from experience that there are several threads the reappear again =
and
again as new builders show up. Soldering, antennas, microphones, build
sequence, and making resistance checks with a DMM are just a few.=20

The subjects may have been done to death for us, but there are always =
new
ops coming along who need to ask about them again.=20

The whole thing reminds me of college when, every fall, a new crop of
freshmen would show up asking where the rest rooms were. It got to where =
we
wanted to hide for the first few weeks of the term, but once we were =
once
wandering around lost ourselves. It's just one of those things that =
needs to
happen, no matter how much information gets handed out or posted on =
bulletin
boards. Then we discovered the enjoyment of putting a smile on a =
newcomer's
face by welcoming them with patient answers to their questions, no =
matter
how often we've done it before. It's how the Profs and Instructors learn =
to
face a new crop of kids every year. Well, it's how SOME of them learn. =
The
rest develop a permanent "growl" when asked.=20

And, Rick, you're right that you can do a beautiful job with a $10 =
soldering
iron. I've soldered a lot of delicate joints with a $10 iron or even a
butane-powered "Port-A-Sol" pocket iron. Still, if I'm going to have
surgery, I'll probably avoid the doctor who has too much of an affinity =
for
his pocket knife. It's the difference between what Wayne and Eric
recommends be used on the kit if they're going to "guarantee" results, =
and
what CAN work in the right hands.=20

Once we go "beyond" recommending the most basic tool, there are those =
whose
joy is in endlessly-searching for the "ultimate" tools. =20
