Dave:

I've used the RS desoldering iron successfully several times. I even
removed a large IC from a computer motherboard once using it. I soldered
the chip onto another motherboard and that computer worked long after it
was totally obsolete (about a year -hi). It took an hour or so, and I
didn't care too much if I messed up the part or the board. If you can't
safely remove it using the RS tool, spend a buck, buy a new resistor
pack, and remove the old pack the way Ron suggests - in any case,
concentrate on preserving the printed circuit board, not the resistor
pack. How many resistor packs you could buy for the price of a Hakko
desoldering tool? Maybe if you were removing an expensive component, it
could be useful, but a resistor??
