One trick I learned long ago is to cut a small "v" notch in the plastic =
tip of my handheld solder sucker, just large enough to accomodate the =
tip of my soldering iron. This allows me to form a tighter seal with the =
circuit board.

Also, it sometimes helps to add a bit of extra solder to each of the =
joints before attempting to desolder. This can help to transfer heat to =
the other side of the plated-through hole.
