[Elecraft] Trevs New Call

Ron, back in the 70's you got a 1x2 callsign of the FCC's choice upon
payment of $25, having an Extra and having been licensed for 25 years or
more. I was fortunate to get a previously unassigned callsign, although 5YR
had been issued in the 20's (prior to the FCC) as a commercial station
license. Such calls are not classified as vanity calls since no preference
was made. Rather, it was just an FCC callsign re-issue.

Trev, you better be happy with the call and don't listen to what others say!
After 25 years I dropped W6QAS when the Extra class got access to the 2X1
calls because I had my fill of weak DX missing the dits in the end and
QSL'ing to W6QAI or W6QAE. But the underlying reason was more about being
frustrated that I had missed out on the opportunity to get a 1X2 call (In
the 1970's we didn't have the flexibility in asking for vanity calls that we
do today). I hadn't asked for one before they were all gone because back in
the old days, one had to have years of experience holding another class of
license BEFORE they could upgrade to Extra.
So I became AC6Y and loved the rhythm without strings of dits.
One thing I have hated about Ham calls is that they don't need to match the
old FCC engineering district boundaries any longer so the numbers are
becoming meaningless. As a certified (or is it "certifiable"?) loud-mouth
curmudgeon I had spoken out on that subject many times, so when I moved to
Oregon I put my call where my loud mouth is and gave up AC6Y for whatever
the FCC computer spit out, and that's how I became AC7AC. Got a dit at the
end again, but, hey, it's too cute to pass up. Besides, it was free <G>.
And mostly, I like it.
People tell me I should expect hum on my signal. You better be able to tell
everyone that you're "East, South-East" of what?

Well since I've had a bunch of guys telling me: "Trev your call sign is too
long for CW. You should get a better CW call"...I applied for the K6ESE call
on the 15th...Now, the question is who will I break the new callsign in with
when I get it ;-)
