Tried and true Net call up methods include asking for check ins by numerical
part of their prefix; or asking for only "1's from A to L", where the letter
is the first letter suffix to their Number. Ask stations to call in by
saying, "This is", let up on mike to see if there is a double, then their
call: "W1xxx". If you do not have dozens of checkins, that will make it
easier for you. Also consider if you need two antennas, perhaps to account
for varying conditions. Both a vertical and a doublet for example.
Have a backup net control to catch those you miss. Use of a good filter can
go a long way to help.
And, do not overlook turning down the RF gain control. In many cases this
can improve the S/N ratio even if it reduces the strength of the desired
station. It can actually more than reduce the noise behind the station
checking in. In rigs without an RF gain, you might need to provide for a
receive RF attenuator. Just remove it from line before transmitting!
