I had the same moment of confusion that Bill had.  Perhaps a short note 
explaining the substitution would not be out of order.

I gave myself a scare on the front panel board.  I carefully soldered  
all 40 pins of the socket for U1.  Then I carefully looked them over 
under a magnifying glass to make sure I didn't have any solder bridges 
or cold joints.  About half way through the inspection I realized I had 
installed the socket on the bottom side of the board.  Of course, 
that's where it's supposed to be, but for about 20 seconds I had a real 
panic attack...
