Sounds like a brilliant solution to the sidesweeper challenge!

I have a morse key and an iambic paddle connected in parallel with
diodes to did and dah from the key, so I could emulate this setup:
automatic dits with the dit paddle and as long dahs as you like with the
key. It will work better for a sidesweeper than a paddle. If you press
the dit first and then the dah of the paddle it will generate .-.-.-.-
.... , but for the sidesweeper this is not possible so the problem does
not exist.
