David,
I've just finished putting the KPA100 and KAT100 into an EC-2, and went through
the same problem as you describe when I was first checking out the KPA100 in the K2.
I had just replaced the IOC and MCU chips and did not have either tone; changing the
source in the menu didn't have any effect either. I swapped the original chips back in and
the tones were back. I thought maybe I had a bad chipset, but put the new ones back
in a second time. Around this time I noticed in the menu that the sidetone level had been reset
to zero; I didn't think to check that before swapping the chips out initially. I touched up the
solder connections around those sockets as a precaution, although they all looked good.

Subject: [Elecraft] Lost Sidetone and Spotting Tone

I just completed and installed the KPA100 in my K2. I did not yet do the
Control board modifications for computer control. Everything checks out OK
except I have no sidetone or spotting tone, either with the KPA100 or with
the basic K2.
