Another cause could be the way the volume pot is connected after the pot
mod. It inputs the same input signal on the + and - inputs on the LM380
amplifier when the volume pot is at zero. If the LM380's common mode
rejection is poor, you could hear a signal even with a perfect pot. I
checked the data sheet and it does not have a spec for the common mode
rejection. This could mean that it is not very good, as I would think
that this spec is not so important in most LM380 applications.
