I believe that I soldered the wires onto the PC board first and trimmed them to length. Then I carefully bent about 1/16" or so of the end of the wire at a right angle. I had the lugs on the plug arranged to make it easy to get my soldering iron in there. Then I used a very thin needle nose pliers and hooked the wire onto the lugs and soldered.

Software corrects for hardware mistakes. You can rewire the paddle or just change the left-rightness with the appropriate menu setting.
