I would use a permanent fine tip marker, rather than a water-soluble
non-permanent one. The non-permanent will smear if you accidentally rub
it, and will run if it gets at all wet. The permanent marker can still
be removed using an alcohol swab.

I learned this one the hard way, marking maps in the army.
