We had a meeting of the CheeseHead QRP group last Monday. We had a plethora
of radios setup on a bench with daisy chained antenna switches to antenna
farm. There were rockmites, SGC's, Yaesu's and of course all 3 Elecrafts.
The guys were blown away by the K2, the K1 they had already seen before as 2
members have them and then I pulled out the KX1 also. We setup all the
radios and found the same station on about 7.040 and tuned all the rigs in
and started doing A/B switching. Unfortunately from there it got
dirty....all 3 Elecrafts were just phenomenal, the only other rigs that came
close were a SGC and the new 200 watt Kenwood (yeah right what are these
rigs doing here against QRP rigs....well it didn't matter it was basically a
receiver and filtering test). Also in the mix was my buddy's (whom I won't
name by name but he knows who he is) Yaesu FT897. Well everyone agreed that
on this 40 meter CW signal that the 897 just couldn't compete with anything,
even the KX1 was blowing it's doors off for sensitivity and selectivity.
Of course the rest of the evening went downhill as we kept hasseling him
about the Yaesu. But I did loan him my KX1 so I'm thinking he'll probably
pop for an Elecraft product pretty soon.
As an afternote, I was out of town the rest of the week at a Boy Scout Camp
doing some volunteer work and the Director of the Scout Council was also
there (W9MC Mike), and he's a CheeseHead also....well he was delighted in
telling my that Bill, the Yaesu owner, ordered the Collins style CW filter
for his 897 the next day after he was so severely pounded.
