Get a large bucket of water. Put the speakers in twice. Take them out once.

The "real" Altec Lansing has been out of business for two decades. Their
"name" was sold long ago to folks who produce junk for the consumer market.
They are probably terribly shielded and probably have pin 1 problems. 

There is also a good (very small) company using the Altec name making decent
equipment for the pro audio market. They also bought the rights to the name
(for that market).
