Stuart,
The type of BNC plug you refer to where the gasket was sheared on assembly
was possibly limited to one manufacturer, Amphenol. This of the non crimp type
was the main BNC connector supplied from the company I worked with material
supply organisation. Most of the crimp types we used probably came from the same
company as well. We did have a USA sourced BNC connector in the 80's that came
from Kings Electronics Co, Inc. Tuckahoe. NY 10707. These used the outer
insulation of the coax as the pressure sleeve and consequently no gasket was
involved. Worked very reliably under hard usage.
For my own use I have always opted for pressure sleeve connectors where
possible after earlier experience of these in the cable TV industry. They can cost
a little more, but their performance is far superior for my personal usage
than any other type. These use a sleeve gasket that is little affected by usage.
The only damage I have seen is to the extent of the screw thread of the cable
end clamp being imposed in the gasket. Very definitely reusable and
environment friendly by limiting waste. Recycle!
At the end of the day, you use what you are most comfortable with. Me I'm a
"squirrel" and believe in saving all kinds of junk that may be useful someday.
