Steve,

The short pins go into the PC board - that is THE normal way to mount them,
not only for Elecrarft kits but for many others as well.

Page 17 in the K2 manual describes where to solder P4 , which is to the left
of P5.  Are the Long pins inserted into the PCB board or are the short pins
inserted like P5.  The manual , I think, does not describe this in detail.
