Make it snug, Jim, but it is possible to pull so tightly that you break =
the
wire.=20
Small gaps between the wire and the core are normal.=20
I start by passing the wire through the center (turn 1 - each pass =
through
is a turn) then, holding the starting end against the side of the core, =
I
pull and wrap the other end around to the hole again. That way the wire =
gets
formed as it's "laid down" on the core rather than simply threading the =
wire
through the center hole again and trying to "pull it snug".=20
Also, I find that it's hard to hold the first turn well with only my =
finger
or thumb pressing it against the core, so I always wrap an EXTRA turn, =
the I
unwind that first turn.=20
There's plenty of wire, even for a couple of re-windings should you =
break
one. If you decide to wind a core over again, it's NOT necessary to use =
new
wire.=20
If it's not fun to wind them, you can do what a lot of builders have =
done
and get a set of pre-wound coils, stripped, tinned and ready to drop in =
from
"The Toroidguy", Mychael AA3WF. He's an Elecraft-approved source for
pre-wound toroids. Email him at:

The last time I wound a coil, it was on an oatmeal box........
Questions
1. How tightly do you wind the wire around the torroid.
2. Is there plenty of wire for a few mistakes, or should I
go ahead and order more?
Thanks, Jim W4ATK
