Simon,
I have the predecessor to the MP-1, the PW-1. The design is similar, the
PW-1 has a slightly longer whip section, and a slightly larger loading
coil.
Unlike Julian's experience, I've had wonderful luck with the PW-1. I
used it several times ground mounted in my backyard for different
sprints and contests and made many contacts. I also used the PW-1 on a
magmount atop my car with good success.
Julian asserts the tuning coil is difficult to adjust. I did not find
this to be the case. Using the PW-1 with a K1 or K2 equipped with an
antenna tuner, I:
1. Set the tuner in "bypass mode"
2. Adjusted the coil up or down for a peak in the S-meter.
I also marked the coil position for each band
to facilitate easy/fast band changes.
3. Activated the tuner to get a good match for transmitting.
This method yielded an SWR of 1.5:1 or less after coil positioning, and
1.0:1-1.2:1 after allowing the tuner to effect a match.
I use the standard radials that cam with the antenna, they work fine for
me. and I never had problems with a "hot" chassis.
I like the PW-1 and will continue to use it for a long time to come.
Here in Colorado where tall trees for wire antenna setup are hard to
find; the PW-1 a very useful item.
