[Elecraft] Help please - Smoking K2 - no s meter or power controll etc

John,

Is your K2 serial 3000+ ? If it is, the control board changes for the KIO2
were already on the control board, and you would end up with 'strange things
happening' (I don't have the board layout images for the new board, so I
can't predict what the actual 'strange things' might be).

OTOH, if your SN is less than 3000, the control board changes are needed,
but they normally cause no problem with or without the KIO2 plugged in, and
I believe you said that you found that true after you re-added the changes
but before you plugged in the KIO2.

There is the off chance that you have something wrong (miswired) on the KIO2
that may have caused the same bad results as will happen if one uses a
standard computer serial cable plugged into the K2 (you DID use the special
K2 cable, didn't you). Tom Hammond N0SS has a document describing what
might have gotten zapped - look on his website http://www.qsl.net/n0ss for
the PDF file relating to this situation (Tom asks to please download the
file, do not view on-line).
