I've found that medium size Kenwood speakers from about 25 years ago, like
the SP-520, 820, 530, 830, etc., make very fine communications speakers. I
have acquired several over the years for nominal sums at hamfest fleamarkets
and have attached them to my HF, VHF, and scanner radios at home. These old
speakers seem to sound better than the smaller products associated with
later rigs.
I dislike "entertainment/hi-fi" type speakers (and earphones, for that
matter). I think that most have an audio frequency response that is not
optimal for communications use.
For mobile and portable use, I've found the small MFJ-281 speakers to work
surprisingly well, and they're only about $12 new.
I have NOT had good luck with the *internal* speaker in my K1. I'm on my
third one in three years. They seem terribly tempermental on how they are
mounted, if one is to avoid irritating and intermittent fuzziness in the
sound output. I've never come across such problems in any other speaker in
40 years in the radio hobby.

Boze?
The right amount of "booze" helps the sound of any speaker! :-)
