Ultimately, anything we get for free is a gift. Getting a gift is the
option of the giver, not a right of the one who receives.
Significant software development time must be paid for. If the
development must continue then the pay must continue.
There is no free ride. All "hobby" means is that the HOBBYIST doesn't
intend to make money on it.
Find the best software you can, engage the developer with your
suggestions, and PAY. He might just keep on.
There is a list longer than anyone's arm of developers of ham software
that either had their software stolen or got buried by this strange
ham attitude that we should get everything for free. Some of them WERE
putting out excellent software that simply ceased development, and
then gradually ceased to be relevant in a constantly evolving hobby
when upgrading ceased.
You'd think we would learn. After all, we expect to pay money for a
rig, and expect to pay to have new features retrofitted.
